Developing the Scalable Open-Access Digital Textbook for Marine Science

Duke University has recently developed a marine science digital textbook: the Cachalot, that employs marine megafauna examples as a pedagogical hook. Cachalot represents a new form of digital textbook, one that is completely open access and populated with current content written by experts in the field. This presentation will be given by Dr David Johnston of Duke University, who is currently Adjunct Associate Professor at the Cetacean Research Unit, Murdoch.

Smartphones and Marine Mammal Conservation: Citizen Science in the Age of the ‘Tricorder’
When: May 23, 2012

Dr Dave Johnston from Duke University – and adjunct at Murdoch – will be presenting the development of a citizen science program that will engage local citizens in both remote and urban regions of Australia to collect high quality data on coastal marine mammals and their habitats using their smartphones and to transmit these data to an online spatially explicit database where their data are mapped and made available to everyone.

Waste and Recycling Audit – Volunteers Wanted!
